Please note that formatting will erase all data on the USB drive, so make sure to back up any important data before proceeding.
Method 1: Using Windows
Insert the USB drive: Plug your USB drive into an available USB port on your computer.
Open File Explorer: Press the Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
Locate the USB drive: In the left sidebar of File Explorer, you should see your USB drive listed under "This PC" or "My Computer."
Right-click on the USB drive: Click on the USB drive's icon, then right-click it.
Choose "Format...": In the context menu that appears, select "Format..."
Select format options:
File System: You can choose between NTFS (New Technology File System) or FAT32. NTFS is the better choice for larger drives, while FAT32 is more compatible with various devices but has limitations on file size.
Allocation unit size: Leave it as the default unless you have a specific reason to change it.
Volume label: You can give your USB drive a name for easy identification.
Quick Format (optional): Check the "Quick Format" option if you want to speed up the formatting process. If this option is unchecked, a full format will be performed, which may take longer but can sometimes be more thorough.
Start the format: Click the "Start" button to initiate the formatting process. You'll receive a warning that formatting will erase all data; confirm that you have backed up your data and then proceed.
Wait for completion: The formatting process may take a few moments. Once it's done, you'll see a message confirming that the format was successful.
Click "OK" or "Close" to finish: Close the format window, and your USB drive is now formatted and ready to use.
Method 2: Using macOS
Insert the USB drive: Plug your USB drive into an available USB port on your Mac.
Open Disk Utility: You can find Disk Utility by searching for it in Spotlight or by navigating to "Applications" > "Utilities" > "Disk Utility."
Select the USB drive: In Disk Utility, locate your USB drive in the left sidebar.
Erase the drive: Click the "Erase" button at the top of the Disk Utility window.
Choose format options:
Name: Give your USB drive a name.
Format: Choose either "APFS" (for macOS) or "MS-DOS (FAT)" (for cross-platform compatibility).
Scheme: If available, select "GUID Partition Map" for macOS drives, or "Master Boot Record" for Windows compatibility.
Click "Erase": Confirm your choices, and then click the "Erase" button to start the formatting process.
Wait for completion: The formatting process may take a few moments. Once it's done, you'll see a message confirming that the format was successful.
Close Disk Utility: Close the Disk Utility window, and your USB drive is now formatted and ready to use.
Formatting a USB drive is a simple process, but always be cautious, as it erases all data on the drive. Make sure to select the appropriate file system format depending on your needs and the devices you plan to use the drive with.
